What Is Prompt Engineering?
Prompt engineering is the practice of writing inputs that give a generative AI model enough information to produce the result you intend. A model fills any gap you leave with its own assumptions, so an unstructured request tends to return something different each time. Structure narrows that range. When a prompt separates the goal, the subject or task, the surrounding context, the desired style, and any constraints, the model has clearer signals to work from and the output becomes easier to predict and refine. Specificity helps for the same reason — concrete nouns, named styles, and measurable limits are things a model can act on directly.
